Summary

This topic demonstrates how draw a reaction product with a few mouse clicks.

Step by Step

When drawing a reaction, often the product structure is very similar to the reactant structure. Therefore ChemBytes Draw offers the option to copy the reactant to the product side by the click of a button, where the required (typically) few modifications to the product structure can the applied:

  1. Draw (or paste) the reactant structure, then add the reaction arrow (left sidebar button). Notice the Copy button below the reaction arrow. This button only is visible if at least one reactant is present, but no products.

  2. Click above Copy button. This copies the your reactant to the product side; if multiple reactants are present, the leftmost one is copied.
  3. Finally edit the product structure according your needs. In the example below, the hydroy group was removed and a single bond was converted to a double bond.

That's it! Just one click is required for copying, and it took about 5 seconds to create the product. The other way to achieve the same result would have been to select the complete reactant structure with the selection rectangle, right-click it to open its context menu, open the Duplicate sub-menu, and finally click its To Products menu item.

Note: The Copy button works also the in the other direction: In the presence of at least one product and in the absence of a reactant, it copies the product to the reactant side.
